SunPatiens: Finally, impatiens that can stand up to the
sun. VIVA's new SunPatiens, rolling into Home Depot stores by the
end of the month, according to the big boxer, won't droop in the
heat of the day and come in orange, white, purple and red. The new
version of the popular annual, previously restricted to shade and
partial-shade beds, has tested positive for extreme-weather survival
alongside geraniums and petunias.
$3.99-$5.99.
Black cannas: The towering
landscape, container and garden bed plant, treated as an annual
here, has shown up in more pots and arrangements the past year or so
with its broad sweeping leaves and red/orange flowers, topping out
at about 4 feet and higher. This year, Canna Tropicanna Black is the
newest sun-loving incarnation with purple-black foliage and
contrasting scarlet flowers with gold-spotted throats ... unbeatable
when combined with its traditional cousins or lime-green plantings.
